How should I test my internet speed?

The most reliable method for testing your internet speed.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

There are a number of factors that can cause slow internet, but the first and most important step in troubleshooting is to check the speed coming directly into your modem. The most reliable way to do this is by running a wired speed test, which we always recommend our customers complete before reaching out for support.

To run a wired speed test, simply connect your device directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable, then visit fast.com to check your current speed. This method gives you the most accurate reading of the actual internet speed being delivered to your home.

Keep in mind that Wi-Fi speed tests can vary significantly, especially in areas with high levels of wireless interference. This is often the case in condos or apartment buildings, where many Wi-Fi networks are overlapping and competing for signal, which can lead to slower performance or dropped connections.

Starting with a wired test helps determine whether the slowdown is due to your internet connection or your Wi-Fi setup.

At Netcrawler, we’re committed to supporting you with any slow speed issues and can offer helpful tips to improve your Wi-Fi performance. That said, it's important to remember that Wi-Fi speeds are influenced by many variables, including your home layout, connected devices, and nearby network interference.
